ILSenate212bCREST HILL – Newly appointed chair of the Senate Criminal Law Committee, State Senator John Connor (D-Lockport) led a joint hearing earlier this week to discuss public safety issues, and how to use criminal justice data to help formulate solutions.

“Illinois needs to help its public safety community better share and analyze their data,” Connor said. “The ability to share and analyze this data quickly is like turning on a light— it allows us to see our way to smarter policy solutions.”

Members of the Criminal Law Committee, in collaboration with the Senate Public Safety Committee, heard virtually from a variety of panelists Tuesday, including representatives from the Sentencing Policy Advisory Panel, the Alliance for Safety and Justice, the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority, the ACLU, and the Children and Family Justice Center.

Panelists offered testimony on practice of collecting, storing and sharing data, sentencing issues, and improving justice outcomes.  Details on the committee’s next meeting will be announced as finalized.

Committee schedules, witness slips and live proceedings are available at www.ilga.gov.
